ND group seeks change in bottle rocket sales ban

BISMARCK — A group of fireworks stand operators in North Dakota wants to change a new law that prohibits the sale of bottle rockets.

The group has turned in an initiated ballot measure to the secretary of state's office. It seeks a public vote on a proposal to allow bottle rocket sales to people 18 years of age and older.

Lu Ann Moore of Barney is spearheading the effort. She says it's ludicrous to allow the use of bottle rockets but not the sale of them.

Bottineau optometrist Paul Dunderland lobbied the Legislature last year for the ban on bottle rocket sales. He says bottle rockets are dangerous no matter who shoots them off.

Once petition language is approved by Secretary of State Al Jaeger, supporters will need to gather 12,844 signatures to get the measure on the ballot.
