Downstream impacts neglectedIn response to Commissioner Tim Mahoney’s May 2 letter regarding diversion discussion transparency:
The Fargo City Commission welcomed Manitoba Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Steve Ashton to town to claim that downstream effects of the Winnipeg diversion have been addressed and all property protected.
A quick search on the Internet appears to contradict this claim. I have been in contact with numerous property owners north of Winnipeg who tell quite a different story. Homes and property that have never flooded are now being inundated with floodwaters from the expanded floodway. Stories of increased river levels up to 8 feet are not uncommon.
In the interest of transparency, I would request the City Commission welcome to Fargo representatives of the impacted group to discuss the devastating effects the Winnipeg floodway has had on their lives.
