Moorhead collects more than 40 pounds of pills

Since its installation last week, more than 40 pounds of unwanted medications have been collected in the drop-box at the Moorhead police station, said Lt. Tory Jacobson in a news release.

The anonymous drop-box for prescription pills and other medicine has already been emptied three times, with each bag removed holding about 14 pounds, Jacobson said.

Jacobson said the drop-box idea was suggested by one of the department’s investigators and is meant to reduce supplies of abandoned pills that drug users will sometimes target.

The drugs dropped off at the police station are incinerated, ensuring they don’t pollute water sources or end up in landfills, police said in the release.

The drop-box is in the lobby of the law enforcement center at 915 9th Ave. N. Police ask that liquids be sealed in a bottle or plastic baggie. Pills can be put in a baggie or a bottle. Needles are not accepted.
