Flood 2009: A second crest

April 3 – The news came like a punch to the gut: The Red River would have a second crest that could be as bad or worse than what residents had just lived through.

It couldn’t be.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker declared it wouldn’t be.

He dismissed the new National Weather Service data and scolded the agency for releasing such a gloom-and-doom prediction on a Friday.

What people really needed was a relaxing weekend.

And so residents went on with their lives, buoyed by Walaker’s words but still worried.
