Lake Park man gets 4 years for 2008 crash

A 29-year-old Lake Park, Minn., man was sentenced to a four-year prison term Wednesday after a Becker County jury found him guilty of three counts of vehicular homicide.

Jeremy Scott Nelson was found guilty in a seven-day trial in March of criminal vehicular homicide, one count each for driving in a grossly negligent manner, driving under the influence and leaving the scene.

The charges stem from an early-morning collision on Aug. 17, 2008, in which a pickup Nelson was driving struck an ATV driven by a friend he’d been drinking with earlier in the night.

Nelson argued in trial that he tried to avoid the four-wheeler and that his friend behind the wheel of the ATV – Chris Carlson – caused the accident.
