Fargo North prom canceled! Alarmed students discover it's an April Fools' jokeFARGO – An early April Fools’ Day joke at Fargo North High School this morning successfully fooled – and alarmed – teens there.
An assistant principal announced on the intercom this morning that the school’s much-awaited April 24 prom was canceled due to poor behavior at dances in the past and numerous hours of detentions.
The prank, played by the school’s Student Council, did the trick.
It was supposed to last until 2 p.m., but only made it an hour before administrators fielded so many calls from concerned parents they called off the prank.
“We were just inundated with phone calls,” Assistant Principal Kathy Cieslak said. “I think the Student Council got the effect they wanted.”
Students in Spanish teacher Deb Smithson’s class were abuzz with the news during the morning class period.
“Some kids were thrilled it was canceled … some kids were devastated, some kids thought it was funny,” she said. “It’s a good thing it didn’t last until 2. They’re calming down now.
“If they really wanted to improve behavior at dances it would only take doing this once,” Smithson added with a laugh. “But I’m not sure anyone has the chutzpa to do that.”
