Railroad worker killed in derailment identified as cleanup begins in Washburn

WASHBURN, N.D. - Crews on Friday were working to move derailed train engines south of Washburn so officials could determine the extent of diesel fuel leakage.

Dennis Fewless, director of the state Health Department's water quality division, said there was no immediate threat to Turtle Creek because of absorbent material that was put in place to soak up fuel.

Five Dakota, Missouri Valley & Western Railroad engines went off the tracks Thursday, and two of them fell onto the creek bank below the tracks.

Jeff Heitzmann, 46, of Mandan, formerly of Harvey, died in the accident. Another worker was treated at a Bismarck hospital and released.

Railroad vice president Jeff Wood said the embankment apparently gave way, causing the wreck. The Federal Railroad Administration was investigating.
