US House passes bill for North Dakota flood buyoutsWASHINGTON – The U.S. House passed a bill Wednesday that will fund further home buyouts across North Dakota.
The $5.1 billion bill covers flood costs in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s budget. A shortfall had delayed FEMA’s reimbursement to communities for flood-fighting costs and home buyouts.
The bill funds Cass County’s third round of buyouts, which will include about 40 homes. Funding was already approved for 40 properties in the first two rounds.
The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
“We’ve got to get this done quickly so that we can move forward with home buyouts and reimburse local governments for their flood repairs,” said Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., who voted for the legislation in the House.
