Minnesota attorney general not ruling out health care lawsuit

ST. PAUL (AP) — Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson says she isn't ruling out a request from Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty and others to sue over the federal health care overhaul.

Swanson, a Democrat, said Wednesday that she is weighing constitutional issues and Supreme Court case law before making a decision.

Pawlenty and all 68 GOP members of the state Legislature have asked Swanson to challenge the constitutionality of a federal requirement that individuals buy health insurance starting in 2014.

Swanson acknowledges that she has spoken out in favor of universal health care but says she plans to look at the lawsuit request outside of the political arena.

Swanson says she has not set a deadline for her decision because she needs time to review the thick bill.
