Flood 2009: March 22 – From bad to worse
It was the news no one wanted to hear: The Red River flood crest was now expected to be between 39 and 41 feet – a foot higher than anyone thought.
Equally worrisome: The crest would likely arrive by week’s end, a day earlier than originally thought.
Things had gone from bad to worse.
More than 200 Minnesota Army National Guard soldiers joined volunteers at “Sandbag Central.”
Schools canceled classes.
Media outlets began delivering news around the clock.
An urgent appeal went out for sandbaggers.
But would it be enough?
