ND Class B boys consolation roundup: Grovers hold off late Shiloh Christian rally

MINOT, N.D. – Prosperity was hard for Fargo Oak Grove to handle Friday.

The Grovers built big first-half leads, then needed a late run to hold off Bismarck Shiloh Christian 58-52 in the consolation semifinals of the North Dakota Class B state boys basketball tournament.

Oak Grove led 19-4 after one quarter and by as many as 20 points in a half that ended with the Grovers ahead 35-21.

But Shiloh Christian whittled away at the lead, pulling to within one point twice, at 42-41 and 44-43, early in the fourth quarter.

Oak Grove responded, however, going on a 10-2 run to regain a 51-43 advantage with 4:01 remaining. Shiloh Christian got no closer than six the rest of the way.

“We were attacking the basket, getting easy shots,” Oak Grove head coach Kyle Card said of the first-half success.

“Then we got a little complacent, settling for jump shots. They (Shiloh Christian) were able to slow it down, and they got hot. But we made enough plays down the stretch.”

Tanner Lloyd drained a 3-point shot to cap the 10-2 run, which also included back-to-back field goals by junior guard Shayden Akason.

“That’s typical of him. He’s our closer,” Card said of Akason.

Dylan Dangerfield had 20 points and Trey Larson chipped in 10 to pace Oak Grove. Austin Friesen had a game-high 21 points for Shiloh Christian with Wyatt Knell adding 11.
