Johnson & Johnson the right medicine: Duo lead Ada-Borup over Norman Co. East

Paul Johnson’s late-season resurgence continues.

The 6-foot-3 senior center finished with 17 points on 8 of 8 shooting to lead Ada-Borup to a 57-47 victory against Norman County East during the Minnesota Class 1A, Section 6 quarterfinals Saturday at Memorial Auditorium.

“He hasn’t always throughout the year necessarily been the go-to guy,” Cougars coach Trevor Stewart said. “He has kind of gained that role a little bit and we do look to get it to him inside. He’s answered that call.”

Johnson was a force in the paint as Ada-Borup pulled away in the second half.

He drilled each of his five shot attempts after halftime to help the Cougars stretch their lead.

Ada-Borup held a 45-50 advantage with 6 minutes, 31 seconds remaining.

“They were playing really aggressive with their zone,” Johnson said. “We just had to look opposite, see the low block and get some easy buckets out of it.”

Teammate Yuri Johnson also added 15 points.

The Cougars took advantage of Norman County East’s inability to get its offense jumpstarted by racing to a 20-8 lead.

A balanced 11-2 run put the Eagles back in the game. Norman County East’s Corey Pemberton and Scott Lampton each had eight points in the first half.

Ada-Borup held a 26-20 halftime advantage.

The Cougars will take on Norman County West for a berth in the second final at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Memorial Auditorium.

“I think the last two games, we’ve played pretty well,” Johnson said. “Some shots didn’t fall tonight, but I think guys are playing hard and we’ve got good momentum to take into the next section game.”
