FLOOD UPDATE: Flood watch issued on Red River; overland flood warning in effect for Cass, Richland, Clay, Norman, Wilkin countiesFARGO (AP) - The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the Red River, saying it will rise 5 feet in a week in Fargo-Moorhead.
An overland flood warning also is in effect for Cass and Richland counties in southeast North Dakota, and the northwest Minnesota counties of Clay, Norman and Wilkin.
The Red River on Monday is expected to surpass minor flood stage of 18 feet in Fargo-Moorhead. Major flood stage begins at 30 feet. Last spring the Red hit a record 40.84 feet.
Despite the concern for a repeat this year, officials say volunteer sandbagging efforts have seen lackluster turnout. The operation still is halfway to its goal of 1 million sandbags.
In Burleigh County to the west, officials on Friday were opening a site for residents to fill and take sandbags, free of charge.
