Region 1 basketball: Streit breaks slump to lead Central Cass to victory

Riley Streit broke out of his recent tournament slump in style Tuesday.

The senior forward drilled six 3-pointers – including three in a row during a pivotal 17-0 run to open the second half – to help Central Cass to a 66-59 victory against Hankinson in the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 boys basketball tournament semifinals at the Fargo Civic Center.

“I’ve been struggling for part of the year,” said Streit, who finished with 22 points and helped the Squirrels break open a close game with his long-distance barrage. “I guess today I felt it and they happened to go in.”

Central Cass needed an 8-0 run to take a 14-13 lead into the second quarter.

A back-and-forth battle began from there.

Senior post Harrison Weber scored 11 of his 14 first-half points in the second quarter to help the Squirrels to a 33-31 halftime lead.

The Pirates countered with senior Danny Hangaard, who finished the first half with 12 points and five rebounds.

Things went so well for the 6-4 post in the opening 16 minutes that the he banked in a

3-pointer from the top of the key and corralled a rebound while seated in the paint.

“Coach fired us up in the locker room,” Streit said. “And we came out a lot more anxious to play.”

The 17-0 Central Cass run pushed the Squirrels lead to

50-31 with 3 minutes, 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Hankinson clawed back with massive defensive pressure on the Central Cass guards. The Pirates scraped across the floor for loose balls and drilled a few timely shots to 62-55 with a minute to play.

But it was too little and too late.

The Squirrels will face Fargo Oak Grove for the region title at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

“We have to play really well as a team and just have fun out there,” Streit said.
