Oscar fashion: Ruffles on the red carpet

Last year’s collection of muted colors and subdued designs for Oscar formalwear is looking less like an anomaly and more like a trend.

For the second year in a row, many of Hollywood’s stars didn’t shine as vibrantly as the red carpet the walked on. Elegant dresses and accessories designed in silver, gray and gold colors were dominant Sunday evening, with some women sporting silver nail polish.

While there were plenty of tame color patterns, a few actresses shined with vibrant color schemes or designs that dared to be different.

One mini-theme appeared to be ruffles, with both good (Demi Moore) and bad (Vera Farmiga).

And there was a little odd as well, with best supporting actress nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal wearing a dress reminiscent of a fish tank and best actress nominee Carey Mulligan wearing a gown with tiny silverware accents.
