ND state swimming: West Fargo in position for top-two finish

MANDAN, N.D. – West Fargo freshman Ethan Doll swam the top preliminary time in the 500-yard freestyle Friday at the North Dakota state boys swimming meet.

Doll finished the 500 in 5 minutes, 0.81 seconds. Doll also clocked the No. 4 time in the 200 individual medley (2:04.78).

West Fargo head coach Marsha Dahl said her team is in position to defend its state championship, but the Packers are going to have a to have a strong swim today to outduel Minot for the top spot.

“We’re definitely in position for the Top 2,” Dahl said. “We’re looking to gain more. Our goal is to win. … We have to definitely put it in another gear (today) to do that.”

The Packers have two or more qualifiers for the finals in each event, except the 50 freestyle. West Fargo has three of the top seven times in the 200 freestyle.

The meet resumes with the diving semifinals at 11 a.m. today. The swimming and diving finals follow the parade of athletes, which is set for 1:30 p.m.

“We feel that we are in good position because we know that we made up a little bit of ground today,” Dahl said.
