ND Class B state girls basketball: Beach rolls past Carrington and into final

MINOT, N.D. – Any nerves left over for the Beach girls basketball team after its quarterfinal win at the North Dakota Class B state tournament disappeared in the semifinals.

Especially as the top-ranked Buccaneers’ opponent – No. 2-ranked Carrington – didn’t pose any problems in their 67-38 win Friday night at the Minot State University Dome.

Beach’s rout left the arena quiet, especially in a matchup between what was believed to be the two best teams in the state on paper. The Buccaneers beat Carrington 68-60 in an early-season matchup where the Cardinals came back from a double-digit deficit to get within one point late in that game.

“I can’t sit there and predict,” Beach head coach Bob Waldal said. “But deep down, this is the nature of our team.”

Beach (25-0) moves on to face Central Cass for the title at approximately 7:45 p.m. today. Carrington

(23-3) takes on Standing Rock in the third-place game at 6 p.m.

Junior Abby Weinreis let the 3-pointers rain by hitting six overall – with five coming in the first half. She ended with a game-high 22 points. Junior Brittney Dietz added 21 points for Beach.

“The team just got me the ball and I was ready to play,” Weinreis said.

Weinreis said she’s still getting back in the thick of things after suffering a back injury in January that caused her to miss several games.

“I was out for half the season, so it was good to get a better game in,” Weinreis said.

She’s still not completely healthy, Waldal said.

“She just starting to come back,” he said. “There’s no way she’s 100 percent, but the shooting depth is there. … She’s about 80 percent and I like her 80 percent.”
