MN state wrestling: Fergus Falls sends two to individual semifinals

ST. PAUL – For the second year in a row, Fergus Falls has two wrestlers in the semifinals of the state individual wrestling tournament.

Now let’s see if they can get a state title out of it.

Dan Revering rolled in to the 160-pound semis and Colton Thorson advanced at 215 pounds.

“We’re both seniors, so it’s pretty sweet,” said Thorson, the top-ranked wrestler in his class. “This is our last run.”

Fergus Falls has had two state champions. Pete Campion won the Class 3A crown at heavyweight in 1998, and Drew Ross won Class 2A’s 189-pound title in 2008.

Dan Revering was nearly pinned in his first-round match on Wednesday, but survived and was dominant in a 5-0 decision over Cannon Falls’ Brock Gobin on Thursday.

This is Revering’s first state tournament. He missed the whole season last year due to knee surgery, and missed the end of a season due to mono as a sophomore.

“I’ve been to two national tournaments with USA wrestling, but this feels as good as anything,” Revering said. “I did everything I wanted to do in that match. Nothing went wrong.”

Thorson made the semifinals last year, but lost and wound up finishing third.

He needed overtime to advance this year, scoring a takedown in the extra session for a 3-1 win over Grand Meadow-LOK’s Carter Brandt.

“I thought he was going to take me down, but I got my hips around,” Thorson said. “That was close.

“I had to fight for that one, but everybody’s good now.”

Perham heavyweight Jesse Hein scored a 7-4 decision over Dassel-Cokato’s Sam Pokornowski to advance to the semifinals.

Perham’s Sam Warne had a 7-1 lead on top-ranked Drew Fleming of Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran, but Fleming rallied for a late 11-9 decision. Fleming is a two-time state champ.

Class 3A

Mark Wychor’s hustle paid off early on Wednesday, and it paid off late on Thursday as he scored a takedown in the final 30 seconds of the third period to seal a spot in the semifinals.

He advanced with a 4-1 decision over Hastings’ P.J. Mike.

“He made me work, and that was a great match,” Wychor said. “But this is pretty sweet. Only a handful of people from Moorhead have placed at state twice, and now I’m in that list.”

Moorhead’s last state champ was Steve Carr in 1979.

The fourth-ranked Wychor (38-1) takes on seventh-ranked Cole Wilson (40-3) of Faribault in the semifinals.

Class 1A

Top-ranked wrestlers Jordan Novak (135) of New York Mills and Jake Long (145) of West Central Area both advanced to today’s semifinals.

Stephen Erlandson’s pursuit of becoming Breckenridge-Campbell-Tintah’s first state titlist is still going after he advanced to the 160-pound semifinals.

Frazee also landed a pair of semifinalists in Tanner Ellenberg (119) and Jake Schermerhorn (152).
