MN state wrestling: Wychor off to strong start for Spuds

ST. PAUL – Mark Wychor needed just one word to sum up his first match at Minnesota’s state wrestling tournament.

“Perfect,” the Moorhead heavyweight said. “I wanted to go out and score some points and I did that.”

Wychor put the pressure on early and didn’t let up, scoring a 12-3 major decision over Lakeville North’s Mike Larson.

Wychor is ranked fourth in his weight class, and Larson was ranked ninth. That posed no problem for the Moorhead senior.

“Why not start against those guys? You have to beat them all anyway,” Wychor said. “A win like that gives me a lot of confidence because I know I can wrestle with these guys.”

Wychor, who was sixth at last year’s tournament at 215, has another ranked wrestler in today’s quarterfinals – sixth-ranked P.J. Mike of Hastings.

Things weren’t quite as rosy for the other two Spuds at state.

Moorhead’s Chase Morlock (140) and Ben Gaughan (152) both lost their opening-round matches.

Morlock was pinned in 1:58 by Centennial’s Andre Dorschner, while Gaughan dropped an 8-4 decision to Robbinsdale Armstrong’s Alex Napiwocki.

Erlandson rolls in opener for Cowboys

Breckenridge-Campbell-Tintah has never had a state wrestling champ.

Stephen Erlandson made a statement on Wednesday that he would like to be the first.

Erlandson, the second-ranked wrestler at 160 in Class 1A, pinned eighth-ranked David Booth in 3:26.

“That gets the jitters out,” Erlandson said. “I just wanted to get down here and get used to wrestling here right away.”

Spencer Beech took second in 2007 to Wabasha-Kellogg’s Zach Sanders – one of three five-time state champs in Minnesota history.

“We had a runner-up once in (Beech), but there’s not much you can do going against a guy like Sanders,” Erlandson said. “But we’re not worried about that yet. I’m just worried about the next match.”

All three of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s wrestlers lost their opening matches.

Arthur Zavala was pinned by unbeaten Chase Levos of St. Clair-Mankato Loyola at 119. At 140, Zack Askelson lost in a technical fall to top-ranked Tony Vaske of River Valley. At 160, Paynesville’s Michael Doom scored a 16-7 decision over Cooper Moore.

Shane Novak was 10 seconds away from a sending the top-ranked wrestler at 103 pounds in Class 1A packing.

But Isaac Novacek of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River scored a takedown and two nearfall points in the final 10 seconds to escape with the win.

Also advancing were New York Mills’ Jordan Novak and West Central Area’s Jake Long. They are the top-ranked wrestlers at 140 and 145, respectively, in Class 1A.

Frazee has four still in the hunt for state titles in Tanner Ellenberg (119), jake Schermerhorn (152), Rick Brandt (171) and Kody Lafraniere-Sorenson (189).

Pair of Otters still alive at state wrestling

In Class 2A, Fergus Falls had a pair of wrestlers earn spots in the quarterfinals.

Both Dan Revering (160) and Colton Thorson (215) advanced. Thorson scored a first-period pin, but Revering wiggled out of being pinned in the first round and wound up winning a 10-9 decision.

Also moving on in Class 2A were two Perham wrestlers in Sam Warne (125) and Jesse Hein (285).
