Record enrollment reported at Minnesota state colleges, universities

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A record number of students enrolled in Minnesota's 32 state universities, community and technical colleges this spring.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system says enrollment is up by 14,338 student, or 8 percent, compared to a year ago.

System Chancellor James McCormick says the large increase can be attributed to tough economic times.

The state system has a spring enrollment of nearly 198,000 students, compared to about 183,000 last spring.

The university system says enrollment was especially strong at two-year colleges.
