Pro basketball: Ex-Bison Nelson on the shelf for first timeFor the first time in his basketball playing career, Mike Nelson is sidelined with an injury.
The former North Dakota State standout is currently on the injured reserve list for the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Developmental League. A calcium deposit that has formed on his right ankle has forced Nelson to miss the last two weeks of action.
“About a month ago, I rolled my ankle in a game at Tulsa and I thought it was just a sprain,” Nelson said. “But they discovered the calcium deposit. It’s formed a callous on the tendon inside my ankle causing sharp pains.”
Nelson, who ended his NDSU career last year as the school’s seventh all-time leading scorer, hopes to return to action in time for the league playoffs in early April. Sioux Falls is fighting for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Nelson was logging nearly 23 minutes of playing time per game, averaging 7.4 points and 1.2 assists for the Skyforce.
“This is different because I’ve never had to sit out any games in college or high school,” said Nelson, who grew up in Madison, Wis. “What are you going to do? I just hope to be 100 percent by playoff time.”
