Deja Moo is trying to compete with the billion-dollar big boys

Thank you to Forum management and the paper’s Editorial Board. I greatly appreciate receiving the honor of a prairie rose (Feb. 15).

I would also like to thank Al Nielsen for his letter to the editor in Thursday’s Forum. I appreciate the free publicity – especially when it comes from a guy who was in management at Cass-Clay Creamery for many years and continues with them as a consultant.

Nielsen cleverly implies that I have used “faulty information” in the marketing of Deja Moo but did nothing to refute any claim made by me or the marketing of Deja Moo.

I have never suggested that other dairy companies do not sell some milk not treated with recombinant bovine growth hormone. I have only stated that none of the milk in Deja Moo comes from cows treated with this synthetic growth hormone. If Cass-Clay can make that same claim, it should. The reason most dairy companies don’t is because much of the milk they sell comes from cows that are treated with growth hormones.

Nielsen’s commentary correctly states that cold-milk technology has been around for years. In fact, it used to be the most common way used for separating cream from milk but has been largely replaced by the more efficient, much more profitable hot-milk method.

Deja Moo is not about production efficiency. We are about product quality and providing consumers with fresher-tasting milk. Hot-milk technology continues cooking the milk after pasteurization, and to suggest that this does not alter the taste of milk is false.

And finally, Deja Moo is bottled in Sauk Centre, Minn., at the Pride of Main Street Dairy. I stated in an interview with The Forum that they buy milk from a dairy farmer-owned co-op (which has producers in North Dakota and Minnesota). Sorry, Al. No faulty information. Just factually correct marketing by a small business trying to compete in the Red River Valley against the much larger Cass-Clay and Land O’ Lakes companies – both owned by billion-dollar corporations.

I am amused by the attention from Cass-Clay but certainly appreciate the publicity.
