East Region boys hockey: South knocks off Red River in OT
Peter Orson’s goal in overtime lifted Fargo South to a 3-2 victory over Grand Forks Red River on Friday in the semifinals of the East Region boys hockey tournament at Urban Plains Center.
“For him to get it, I was not surprised,” South coach David Benson said. “Good things are bound to happen when you work like he worked.
“But it could’ve been anybody on those top two lines, because they were really creating chances.”
The goal was Orson’s second of the game.
The game-winner came after South won a face off, and got the puck in front to Orson, who buried it with 4 minutes, 10 seconds to go in overtime.
Red River dominated the first period, outshooting the Bruins 11-3, but the game was scoreless after the opening stanza.
South came roaring back with 21 shots in the second, but Red River hung in, and the game was tied 1-1 going into the third.
“We couldn’t get anything in the first,” Red River coach Bill Chase said. “We had chances. We hit a cross bar. We hit the post. And we knew South would come back.
“(Goaltender Bryan) Nies kept us in it.”
Nies stopped 20 shots in the second period alone, and finished with 37 saves.
Scott Buchholz stopped 33 shots in the win for the Bruins.
After trading even-strength goals in the second period, the teams traded power-play goals in the third to force the extra session.
“It was fast-paced and up and down and just a good game by both teams,” Benson said. “Both goalies were fantastic. It was just a fun, high-school game.”
The Bruins face Grand Forks Central in the region title game at 5 tonight. The Knights split with South in their two games during the regular season.
Red River takes on West Fargo in a state-qualifying game at 2 p.m. today.
