Boys hockey: Bruins bounce Devils LakeDevils Lake needed to play nearly mistake-free hockey to score an upset over Fargo South in the first round of the East Region Hockey tournament on Thursday.
The Firebirds made just one too many mistakes in the second period.
Bill Carlson’s power-play goal late in the middle period gave the Bruins enough breathing room to set up a 6-1 victory for South at Urban Plains Center.
“We go into the third with a two-goal lead, and that was a big thing,” South coach David Benson said. “…We got better as the game went on, and that was good to see.”
South led 2-1 after the first period thanks to goals from Josh Hooey and Jarret Olson-Etches, but Devils Lake outworked the Bruins for much of the second period.
That’s when the penalties hit. Devils Lake committed four penalties in the span of 6 minutes, 54 seconds, and Carlson finally buried a power-play goal with 1:33 left in the period.
Once they had the breathing room, the Bruins knocked in two more early in the third period to wrap things up.
Peter Orson scored in the first minute of the final period, and Olson-Etches notched his second of the game roughly three minutes after Orson’s goal.
“I thought that getting another one in the first shift of the third period was also big,” Benson said. “Earlier in the year, the power play hadn’t been clicking, and to get a couple power-play goals helped.
“They caused us some problems, and it took us awhile to get a feel for things.”
