Vonn hooks gate, misses medal in combined

WHISTLER, British Columbia — Lindsey Vonn's bid for a second Olympic medal will have to wait.

Vonn posted the best time in the super combined downhill on Thursday — a milder version of the event she won a day earlier — but hooked a gate in the slalom portion of the event and fell.

Germany's Maria Riesch won the gold in the super combined, beating American Julie Mancuso, who won the bronze Wednesday, by nearly a second. Anja Paerson of Sweden recovered from a spectacular crash in Wednesday's downhill to finish with the bronze.

It was skiing the slalom two weeks ago where Vonn injured her shin. The event will put more pressure on her bruised shin than any other event.

"It's not good," Vonn said of her shin after the downhill. "It's really hurting. I'm just struggling with it. It's definitely the most painful it's been since I started skiing on it."
