UPDATE: Moorhead's Matt Cullen traded to OttawaRALEIGH, N.C. - The Ottawa Senators acquired former Moorhead High School hockey standout Matt Cullen from the Carolina Hurricanes today in exchange for defenseman Alexandre Picard and a draft pick.
“I’m excited to go to Ottawa,” Cullen told The Forum on Friday. “It will be a good opportunity to win the Cup. … It’s kind of the way of it now with the salary cap. I wasn’t completely shocked by it. I was prepared for something to happen.”
The trade gives the Northeast Division-leading Senators a forward with significant postseason experience. Cullen was a valuable third-line center on the Hurricanes' team that won the 2006 Stanley Cup and reached the Eastern Conference final last year.
The 33-year-old Cullen has 12 goals and 28 assists in 60 games this season. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
