Ice scrapers given to Fargo teenagers

A teen outside Shanley High School who had driven to school without scraping snow and ice off her windshield has spurred a citywide project.

After Mike Clower, the Fargo Catholic Schools Network school resource officer, warned her of the dangers of driving with an obstructed view, he decided to take the message a step further.

All Fargo school resource officers are now distributing ice scrapers to Fargo teens. The Fargo Police Department ordered 500 of the ice scrapers that read, “Think twice, scrape the ice.”

“They chuckle a little bit,” Clower said. “(But) they all like it. It gets the word out that it’s not safe and it is illegal.”

The Police Department spent about $500 on the scrapers – a small investment to keep kids safe, said crime prevention officer Tara Morris.

Drivers who neglect to scrape their windshield of ice or snow before driving could receive a $20 fine.

“A lot of them don’t realize it’s a chargeable offense,” Morris said. “Just that reminder will serve as a deterrent.”
