Moorhead High grad working on ‘Frankenstein’ production

Preston Boyd is a monster, and he seems pretty happy about it.

The 24-year-old Moorhead High graduate is on tour in the Mel Brooks musical “Young Frankenstein,” in which he serves as the understudy for the part of Dr. Frankenstein’s Monster. It’s a part played by Tony award-winner Shuler Hensley.

Boyd, who says he’s the youngest member of the cast, described the experience with the production as “basically a master class every time I do a show.”

Even when he’s not filling in for Hensley, he’s still on stage in various ensemble roles. And his on-stage personas include a Transylvanian, an executioner, a mad-scientist relative of Dr. Frankenstein and a herald.

The show makes its way to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis Feb. 9 through 14. Any chance he’ll get to play the monster while in the area?

“It all depends if I push (Hensley) down the stairs … Nah, nah, I’m kidding,” Boyd says.

If you go
