Italian pro team releases Winkelman

Despite averaging 15 points per game, former North Dakota State basketball standout Brett Winkelman has been released by the Edimes-Pavia professional basketball team in Italy.

In an interview on Thursday’s “Sports Talk” on WDAY-Radio, former NDSU standout Mike Nelson said Winkelman was released because the Edimes-Pavia team is looking for a big center. Sportundo, a Web site providing worldwide basketball news, confirmed that Winkelman will leave the team. Winkelman, a 6-foot-6 forward who helped lead NDSU to last year’s NCAA Tournament, averaged 15.4 points for Edimes Pavia - a team that was tied for last place with a 4-12 record in a 16-team Italian league. The league is the second-highest competitive professional league in Italy.

Nelson said Winkelman told him he hopes to sign with another team in the same league.

Winkelman could not be immediately reached for comment.
