Sethi sets retirement date

Longtime Clay County Administrator Vijay Sethi announced Tuesday that he will retire in December.

Sethi, who started working for the county in 1985 as county coordinator, made the announcement at Tuesday’s Clay County Commission meeting.

Sethi, who will turn 65 this summer, said he would be leaving county government, but he planned to continue working.

“Not on a real hectic, full-time basis, but on a maybe more limited basis,” he said.

“My undergraduate degree and graduate degree was in architecture, with emphasis on sustainable housing. So, I might look at doing something in that area,” Sethi said.

In announcing his retirement, Sethi presented commissioners with a proposed timeline for finding his replacement.

It called for offering someone the job by September.

Commissioners, however, said they want to have someone hired before that so the new administrator can play a role in preparing the 2011 budget.

Much of the work that goes into putting the budget together is done over the summer.

Sethi, whose job title was changed from county coordinator to county administrator in 1999, said he would continue working until December to help train his replacement.

Before making his announcement Tuesday, Sethi had his annual review with commissioners, who stated afterward that Sethi’s work had been excellent.

Also Tuesday, the commission lauded the work of County Recorder Bonnie Rehder by issuing official congratulations to Rehder for having been named the Minnesota Recorder of the Year by the Minnesota Association of County Officers.
