Weekend Watch: Russ Peterson

While Russ Peterson’s show Friday is technically a faculty recital for the Concordia saxophone instructor, it really doubles as a CD release party for one of the hardest-working musicians in Fargo-Moorhead. In addition to teaching, Peterson plays bassoon in the F-M Symphony, leads the Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome and performs in smaller ensembles as well. He rolls some of those sounds together on his new disc, “Russ Peterson and Friends: Jazz and Rock Saxophone.” Peterson winds from world jazz like “Girl from Ipanema” to his own composition “Latin Pants,” and on to the Hoagy Carmichael classic, “Georgia on My Mind.” Friday’s performance at Concordia’s Hvidsten Hall of Music will lean more toward classical tunes, but will still showcase Peterson’s chops.
