Adolescent issues topic of play Jan. 16 at MSUM

A group of young female playwrights and their adult mentors will challenge the public on issues surrounding adolescent sexuality, desire and mental health in a play at 7 p.m. Saturday in Glasrud Auditorium in Weld Hall at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

The teenage writers call themselves “The Group That Opened the Box.” Their play, “Shhhhhh!,” premiered at Bismarck State University in September and explores topics such as teen pregnancy, gender bending, first love, death and friendship.

Directed by Kathy Blohm, a Bismarck psychologist, and Karen Van Fossan, an Archibald Bush Artist Fellow, the production includes photos by Kristi Rasmussen, formerly of Bismarck.

The seven teens, all from western North Dakota, started as a one-time writers’ group for creative adolescent girls and they decided to create the play together.

The play is free and open to the public. Freewill donations will be accepted. For more information, call (218) 477-4606.
