Portraits: Bob Boyum

“Every dog has its own personality,” Bob Boyum of Fargo says as he plays fetch with Bailey, a black mixed Lab puppy. Bailey is one of about 14 dogs per week at the Fargo-Moorhead Humane Society, and Boyum is one of the volunteers who help socialize the cats and dogs in the kennels with human interaction and exercise.

With volunteers somewhat scarce over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and the kennels full, Boyum spent time on Thanksgiving and about seven to nine hours on Christmas Day walking and playing with the dogs. “I try to give them more time outside their cages. Walks are usually 15 to 20 minutes, unless they’re having fun,” he explains, saying sometimes he takes them to the nearby dog park, where they might run for up to 45 minutes.

Boyum has been volunteering at the Humane Society for about three months, after moving to Fargo from Colorado. “I had some spare time on my hands, so I volunteer here twice a week for two hours at a time,” Boyum says, adding that the staff is wonderful to work with.
