Petition to boost ND alcohol taxes approved

BISMARCK – Secretary of State Al Jaeger has approved an initiative petition that seeks to increase North Dakota’s taxes on beer, wine and liquor.

Supporters of the measure say it would provide about

$2 million annually for alcohol education and prevention.

Jaeger’s approval on Wednesday means the measure’s backers may start getting petition signatures. They’ll need at least 12,844 signatures from North Dakota voters to put the proposal on the ballot.

Campaign chairman Duane Peterson of Gwinner said he wants a statewide vote in November 2010.

The proposal would raise North Dakota’s wholesale tax on a six-pack of beer from

9 cents to 14 cents. The tax on a liter of wine would increase by 2.3 cents.
