Portraits: Jim Gurney
Hockey isn’t the only thing to watch at Fargo Force games this year. Jim Gurney, 52, of Fargo plays a Zamborgan, a keyboard placed inside a wooden box made to look like a Zamboni. “It’s kind of a challenge to do,” Gurney said. “I need to keep it tight, keep it simple and play into it.” Gurney is the music director at Messiah Lutheran Church in Fargo, teaches piano and accompanies music students at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He stumbled upon the Zamborgan position through an
e-mail under the Fargo chapter of the organ guild. Gurney plays from a variety of song books but mainly improvises the chords. He plays honky-tonk, ragtime and music from the 1930s through the ’80s. “And then I’m lost in the ’90s and 2000s,” Gurney said.
