MN Class 2A, Section 8 volleyball: Wadena-Deer Creek eliminates D-G-FHAWLEY, Minn. – The youth movement is still alive in Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 volleyball.
For the second year in a row, a youthful Wadena-Deer Creek squad claimed the title, beating a senior-heavy team – just like the Wolverines did last year.
WDC downed Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 25-10, 25-18, 19-25, 26-24 on Saturday to earn another trip back to state.
“We’ve got a lot of juniors, but they’re all pretty good,” said WDC coach Sue Volkmann. “We only have one senior, so we’re still figuring out those leadership roles, but we still work pretty well together.”
One of those juniors – Kelsi Crawford – slammed the door on a spirited comeback attempt by the Rebels.
After the Wolverines took the first two sets and then dropped the third,
D-G-F was oh-so-close to tying the match.
The Rebels led the fourth set 21-17, but then Crawford took over. She had three kills in a rally that tied the match at 23-23.
“She had a great game,” Volkmann said of Crawford. “She was hitting so well. We had to go to her in that spot.”
Two kills by Brittany Noon and an ace serve by eighth-grader Heather Theisen capped the victory with a 26-24 win, setting off a state-bound celebration.
“We came out a little flat, and they were making the plays,” D-G-F coach Tessa Tysver said. “We were getting back into it, and then we let that fourth game slip away.
“We were too comfortable with that lead.”
Crawford finished with 23 kills and Noon added 21. Rachel Craig had a hand in 16 blocks for WDC.
D-G-F was led by Sara Anderson’s 12 kills and three blocks. Kaylee Penders also had 11 kills in the loss.
WDC dumped a senior-heavy East Grand Forks team in last year’s title game. D-G-F’s squad had eight seniors this season.
“This one is hard because this is such a great group,” Tysver said. “We’re really going to miss all eight of those seniors.”
