High school football: Hankinson rolls past South Border

ASHLEY, N.D. – Hankinson had a stretch early in the 9-man playoffs in which it scored six points in six quarters.

The next five quarters were more productive. Way more productive.

The Pirates scored touchdowns on six of their first eight possessions Saturday afternoon en route to a 55-36 win over South Border in a 9-man quarterfinal game. Hankinson

(8-2) has scored 88 points in its last five quarters, including 33 in the fourth frame of its 39-20 win over Napoleon-GS on Oct. 24. It has scored 94 points in its last 62 minutes of play.

“I don’t what to say except that we’re really clicking right now,” said Hankinson quarterback Alex Althoff, who passed for 106 yards and ran for another 145 on Saturday. “We were in a little bit of a drought, but we got it going in the fourth quarter last week, and we kept the momentum going today.”

The Pirates, who will take on Hillsboro in Saturday’s semifinal round, rolled up 519 total yards on the day, including 413 rushing. Running back Garrett Stein totaled 263 yards (224 rushing) and four TDs.

“We executed so well out there,” Hankinson coach Jason Monilaws said. “The last five quarters for us have been unbelievable to say the least.”

The Pirates wasted little time putting the first 13 points of the game on the board. Althoff hooked up with Stein for a 39-yard score on a fourth-and-9 play with only 1:08 gone in the first quarter.

Then on the ensuing kickoff, Danny Hangaard stripped the ball away from South Border’s Tallon Lippert and took it 25 yards to paydirt. Justin Roeder’s extra point made it 13-0 with 10:40 left in the first.

Hangaard, a 220-pound senior, also scored last week off a strip he made on a kickoff.

“Danny seems to have that knack,” Monilaws said. “He’s always looking for the strip. He’s always looking to make a play.”
