Davies High structure, staff taking shape

Both the physical space and the team that will populate Fargo’s new Davies High School are beginning to take shape, district officials said.

And it’s a hectic but exciting time, said Principal Jeff Schatz, who gave the School Board an update Tuesday on the school, slated to open in 2011.

“When people ask me what I’m up to, I say, ‘One thing at a time. One day at a time,’ ” he said. “There are many things to be addressed.”

Though the recent stretch of rainy weather has complicated the work of the construction team, it hasn’t caused any significant delays, said Assistant Superintendent Dan Huffman. The football field is seeded. A science and math classroom section is almost complete. The floor of the pool has been poured.

“For all practical purposes, we’re still pretty much on our construction schedule,” Huffman said.

Meanwhile, Schatz is assembling a staff. The district named three assistant principals for Davies on Tuesday: Marcy Blikre and Lenny Olhauser, now at South Campus II, and Fargo North Assistant Principal Dale Miller. South Dean of Students Mark Blanshan will assume the assistant principal position at North.

Next month, Davies officials will start interviewing for head coach positions. Teachers will know before the end of the school year whether they’ll eventually move to Davies, said Schatz: “They’ll have the summer and all of next year to prepare.”

The district is shopping for new varsity uniforms and letter jackets.

On the Davies High Web site, parents can find construction updates, information on athletic schedules, a transition Q&A and more.
