Weekend Watch: Murder by Death


The name may sound like a heavy-metal band, but Murder by Death is probably as much inspired by bluegrass picker Ralph Stanley’s “O Death” as Motorhead’s “Killed by Death.” (The band is actually named after a mid-1970s Neil Simon comedy.) Bending the lines of punk and country, Adam Turla spins old Western epic tales about love, death, sin, redemption and guilt, sung, not surprisingly, with echoes of Johnny Cash. The secret weapon, however, is Sarah Balliet, whose cello amps up the ambient weight.
