UPDATED: BNSF cleaning up 19-car derailment near Casselton

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway crews were cleaning up after a 19-car derailment that occurred 3 miles west of Casselton, N.D., early today, according to a BNSF spokesman and the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

The derailment of the eastbound train occurred about 1:30 a.m. near County Road 10, Deputy Tim Briggeman wrote in a news release.

BNSF had 75 people responding to the derailment, said Gus Melonas, a railroad spokesman in Seattle.

One of the two tracks was expected to be cleared and back in use this evening, Melonas said. The other track was expected to be back in operation about 1 a.m. Monday, he said.

About 4 p.m., County Road 10 was still closed on both sides of its crossing with the tracks.

Lumber lay in piles around the site of the derailment and several cars looked moderately to heavily damaged.

No injuries were reported and no hazardous materials or chemicals were spilled, Melonas said.

BNSF will be responsible for the investigation of the derailment, Briggeman wrote.
