Flexing their depth: Six Spuds get at least four kills in sweep of D-G-F

When Char Lien said everybody on the Moorhead volleyball team was going to be involved this season, she meant it.

Six different players had at least four kills against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Tuesday, and the all-inclusive attack led to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-17 sweep over the Rebels.

“We’ve got to use everybody,” Lien said. “That’s what the game plan is, but to do it, we have to pass well. We were able to do that.”

Alison Bruggeman led Moorhead with 10 kills.

However, the Spuds also got eight from KayLani Penas, seven from Anna Peterson, six from Abby Tietz, five from Andrea Hubka and four from Laura Holsen.

“They were strong at the net, but we knew that,” D-G-F coach Tessa Tysver said. “With that and our passing, we were in trouble. We didn’t play the scrappy defensive game we usually play.”

The Rebels’ passing woes really stung in the second game.

After the Spuds (3-0) won the opener 25-17 behind kills from five different players, Moorhead took advantage of 11 D-G-F errors on the way to a 25-19 win for a 2-0 lead in the match.

“Again, that all came back to our passing,” Tysver said. “We would get close, and then we would just lapse again. We couldn’t put anything together.”

D-G-F managed to take a 13-12 lead in the second game, but Moorhead rattled off the next six points – including four on Rebels errors – to take the lead for good.

“The Achilles heel of this group in the past has been to get down a couple of points and just give up,” Lien said. “Now it’s like they’re not letting one point get to them. They’re focusing on what’s ahead, not what just happened.”

Moorhead took a 12-7 lead in the third game behind kills from six different players and rolled on to the 25-17 victory to seal the sweep.

The Rebels were led by Lindsay Thompson’s five kills, and Emily Frink had three ace serves in the loss.

D-G-F (1-1) hosts Lake Park-Audubon on Thursday before heading to the Apple Valley Tournament this weekend.

Moorhead travels to Perham on Sept. 15.
