Man sentenced in bald-eagle killing

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A Fort Totten, N.D., man charged with killing a bald eagle has been sentenced to 10 months of work release and three years of probation.

James Robertson Sr., 44, pleaded guilty in June to unlawful taking of a bald eagle, unlawful sale of a migratory bird and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

At Thursday’s sentencing, Robertson was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the Spirit Lake Indian Nation.

Robertson was accused of killing the eagle in November or December 2008, and his brother, 51-year-old Kim Lee Robertson, was accused of buying it, according to a federal indictment.

Kim Robertson intends to plead guilty to the charge of unlawful purchase of a bald eagle, court documents show.
