High school football: Minnetonka gets past Fargo North

Beau Allen, the 6-foot-3, 301-pound nose guard being recruited by a dozen NCAA Division I colleges, was done playing before halftime Friday night.

That’s how dominating Minnetonka (Minn.) was in its 38-6 high school football victory over Fargo North at the Fargodome.

“Wow,” said Fargo North head coach Kelly Kalina. “We knew what we were getting into. Unfortunatly, they have 85 players to our 35 and physically, we are just not at their level.”

Especially at Allen’s level. The fourth-ranked Minnesota high school football prospect, Allen is the anchor to a defensive line with five returning starters. He’s already had offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Nebraska, UCLA, Stanford, Minnesota, Colorado, Iowa, Iowa State and Wisconsin.

“He just dominated,” Kalina said. “And you can’t stay away from him because he lines up three inches from the ball. He just creates so much havoc.”

A North fumble set up Minnetonka’s first score. Less than three minutes later, Austin Harrington scored on a 77-yard screen pass. Less than two minutes later after North’s

14-yard punt, Larry Rice scored on a 1-yard run. Before the second quarter, the Skippers were ahead 19-0.

In the second quarter, Minnetonka added two more scores without its offense. James Farrow returned a punt for an 88-yard touchdown. Hunter Bates recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to make it 31-0 three minutes before halftime.

The scoreboard operator kept the clock running in the second half.

North, coming off a 39-13 season-opening loss to defending Class 3A champion Bismarck, is now 0-2. Is Bismarck as good as Minnetonka, now 1-0 and section runner-ups to Hopkins last year?

“Not even close,” Kalina said. “We don’t see anything like that at that level.”
