Suicide in focus Sept. 6-12In recognition that National Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 6-12, I would like to encourage the public to learn more about suicide and ways to prevent it. Learning some of the key warning signs, such as feeling hopeless, withdrawing from friends and family and making suicidal statements, can help save lives.
If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal or just needs to talk, help is available by calling (800) 273-TALK.
Another way the community can help is by participating in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s “Out of the Darkness” community walks, five of which are happening in North Dakota this fall (in Williston, Minot, Grand Forks, Fargo-Moorhead and Bismarck-Mandan).
Whether you have been touched personally by suicide or not, we encourage you to participate. Funds will support national and local suicide prevention research and education programs. Visit www.outofthedarkness.org for more information.
More needs to be done to prevent suicide, and you can help.
