South Dakota's McGovern calls Kennedy 'greatest senator of 20th century'

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Former Sen. George McGovern, who started serving in the U.S. Senate with Ted Kennedy in 1962, calls Kennedy ``the greatest senator of the 20th century.'

The 77-year-old Kennedy died Tuesday night after battling brain cancer.

McGovern says no other senator has played such a big role in shaping a wide range of important legislation.

McGovern, who is 87, says he has remained close friends with the family.

And he says it would be a fitting tribute to Kennedy's memory if the Senate would enact a strong national health care program.

McGovern served three terms in the Senate and was the Democratic Party's unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1972.
