Oakes puts defensive twister on display in shutout of Kindred

OAKES, N.D. – Oakes’ move from 9-man may mean some bad news for the rest of the 11-man teams in Class A.

Now the Tornadoes have two more guys on the field for defense.

Oakes opened the season with a shutout of Class 2A Kindred, winning 20-0 at Cummings Field on Tuesday.

“I didn’t think we were going to get a shutout tonight, to be honest,” Oakes head coach Shawn Sagert said. “But we knew our defense was going to be our strong point.”

The Tornadoes might not need 11 players on defense if Ethan Plemel keeps this up. The senior had 17 tackles for Oakes, and his first was a doozy.

Plemel ended Kindred’s first drive with a quarterback sack that forced a fumble, which he promptly recovered.

The offense responded, as Tanner Zetocha capped the

44-yard drive with a 21-yard scoring run.

“That was definitely big for us because we needed a good start,” Plemel said.

“That got everyone’s head on straight right away.”

Jason Hagen – who rushed for more than 2,000 yards last season – drew a lot of attention on offense, but Oakes quarterback Taylor Ptacek did the bulk of the damage.

Ptacek hooked up with Adam Ladwig for a pair of touchdown passes, and hit Zetocha for a 2-point conversion.

“When we needed him to make a play, he made it,” Sagert said. “He made good decisions, and it was good for us to get off to a good start like that.”

Hagen finished with 73 yards on 20 carries, while Ptacek was 5-for-11 through the air for 81 yards. Ladwig had four catches for 67 yards.

Oakes went 9-2 while playing 9-man last season, and moved up to 11-man this year for the first time since 2004.

The bump up to Class A put a little bit of a chip on the shoulders of the Tornadoes.

“We want to prove that we can step up and play just as well up here as we did in 9-man,” Plemel said. “We weren’t too good the last time we were in 11-man, so we feel like we have something to prove.”
