UPDATED: NDSU enrollment headed to 14,000FARGO - North Dakota State University has 13,855 students enrolled this fall, a 7.6 increase over this time last year.
The university is headed toward an enrollment of 14,000 for the first time ever, said Prakash Mathew, NDSU’s vice president for student affairs.
The official fall enrollment will be announced Sept. 22.
The first-day headcount represents an increase of 984 students over last year’s enrollment of 12,871 students.
Last fall, NDSU broke the 13,000 mark for the first time with a final headcount of 13,229 students.
Mathew said before today, he was hesitant about whether NDSU would hit 14,000 this year.
“I did not anticipate this type of an increase,” he said.
NDSU officials attribute the increase to many factors, including an increase in student retention, more transfer students, and a higher number of international, graduate and Minnesota students.
The largest jump came in international students. There are 1,005 international students enrolled, compared to 747 last year at this time, a 34.5 percent increase.
Enrollment of freshmen actually decreased this year. NDSU has 2,463 new freshmen, a 7 percent drop from last year’s 2,648 freshmen.
That’s because last year NDSU had a record freshman class with a 22.9 percent jump, Mathew said.
