Roesler advances to today’s 800 Pan Am finalsPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Laura Roesler, who will be a senior this fall at Fargo South, advanced to the 800-meter finals Saturday at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships.
Roesler finished third in her preliminary heat with a time of 2 minutes, 13.32 seconds, gaining an automatic bid to today’s final. She ran the sixth-fastest time of the eight advancing finalists.
The other U.S. athlete, Chanella Price, won her heat and had the best overall qualifying time. Price is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee.
The Pan Am Junior Championships are open to athletes from all the countries in the Americas who will be 16, 17, 18 or 19 this calendar year.
Roesler, who advanced to the semifinals of the 800 meters at the 2008 Olympic Trials, made the USA team for the Pan Am Juniors by finishing second at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June.
As a junior at Fargo South this past spring, Roesler earned Class A girls titles in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters for the fourth consecutive year at the North Dakota state track and field meet.
