More information is always betterBravo to state Sen. Robert Erbele of Lehr, N.D., for sponsoring and to the North Dakota House and Senate for overwhelmingly passing the new law that will require women seeking an abortion be given the opportunity to see an ultrasound of their baby and hear its heartbeat.
I applaud our Legislature for having the courage to mandate that an abortion provider offer this service, which in the interest of its patients, it should have been doing all along. As a health care provider myself, the argument that giving a patient more information prior to their consenting to a procedure is a bad thing is laughable.
The Center for Reproductive Rights said in a news release that the cost of the equipment needed to listen to a fetal heartbeat would impose a high financial burden on the abortion facility. Another laughable argument since a Google search easily reveals several models of fetal heart tone monitors that sell for less than $700.
