Massa records historic triple crown

Taylor Massa made wrestling history Friday at the Fargodome, although it was hard to tell from his reaction.

Massa appeared relieved, but calm after he earned a 4-2, 3-1 decision against Jordan Rogers for the 152-pound Cadet freestyle title at the ASICS USA Wrestling tournament.

“I was kind of disappointed with my match out there,” said Massa, who wrestles for Team Michigan. “After the match, it’s done. I was mostly kind of disappointed with my performance out there. … I really wanted to tech (fall) or pin everyone all the way through.”

The victory gave Massa a Cadet triple crown for a second consecutive year, meaning he won national titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle in the same year. Massa is the first Cadet to win two triple crowns.

“I always believed that I could do it,” Massa said. “Now I’ve proved to everyone I can go out there and wrestled the best kids, I can beat the best kids. … It’s pretty nuts that I’ve been able to do it.”

Massa won the Greco-Roman national crown Monday and earned the folkstyle national title in Cedar Falls, Iowa in April.

“I think he felt relieved and I was happy that he felt relieved,” said Rodger Massa, Taylor’s father and a Team Michigan coach.

“He’s kind of a goal-oriented kind of kid and that was his goal. The first time he won a triple crown, he’s like, ‘Nobody’s ever won two,’ so that was his goal. He usually never gets nervous, but I could tell that last match he got pretty nervous for some reason.”

It was also a triple crown of sorts for Taylor Massa’s wrestling club, Massa’s Maniacs, which is based in St. Johns, Michigan.

Ben Whitford earned a 1-1, 1-1, 5-3 decision for a national title at 112 pounds. Jordan Wohlfert scored a 5-11, 4-0, 3-0 victory at 140 pounds to win a national crown. Whitford was named outstanding wrestler for the freestyle tournament.

Whitford edged Mark Grey of New Jersey in the finals. Grey was going for his second consecutive double national championships at this tournament. Grey beat Whitford for the Greco-Roman crown earlier this week.

Both Whitford and Wohlfert train with Massa, and all three are expected be on the same high school team next season.

“I think it’s better than winning it by yourself to know that some of your closest friends are right there with you doing the same exact thing,” Taylor Massa said. “To be the best, you have to train with the best and we have three of the best.”

Rodger Massa said he built a wrestling room behind his chiropractic practice around three years ago to create more mat time for wrestlers.

“Sometimes it was hard to get into the high school because our high school has no tradition,” Rodger Massa said. “We had to share with baseball, cheerleading, softball.

“It was kind of frustrating because we had all these kids who wanted to work hard and we couldn’t get in there. … My wife kind of said, ‘If you want one, just build one.’ So I said, ‘Alright.’ ”

Prior to this past high school season, St. Johns High School had just two state champions in its school history. It had three this past season and it appears that number will grow quickly in the next few years.

Rodger Massa said there are around 20 wrestlers – from all around Michigan – that train at the club.

“It’s just kind of like good kids who want to practice with good kids,” Rodger Massa said. “It’s really fun for me because they’re all kids who want to get better. It’s a credit to the kids because they really push each other.”

Taylor said it’s been nice to have his dad help him develop as a wrestler.

“I have all the respect in the world for him and I love him,” Taylor said. “He’s a great coach, and I just do what he tells me.”

Jake Waste, Ramsey, Minn., and Devin Peterson, Wisconsin Rapids., Wis., also completed triple crowns.

Waste earned a 0-3, 5-0, 6-0 decision over Sam Brooks of Illinois at 160 pounds. Peterson scored a 2-0, 2-2, 2-0 decision against Lucas Sheridan of California at 171 pounds.

Illinois won the Cadet freestyle team title with 89 points, followed by Pennsylvania (69), Ohio (58), Iowa (53) and Minnesota (48).

Schiller to wrestle

for fifth place

West Fargo’s Scott Schiller will wrestle for fifth place at 189 pounds in Junior freestyle after finishing third in his pool.

Schiller was undefeated through six matches before losing to Minnesota’s Tyler Lehman and New Jersey’s Max Huntley.

Huntley made the national championship match, while Lehman will wrestle for third place. Lehman used to wrestle at Fargo North before transferring to Apple Valley.

“I’m a little disappointed that I lost. I just worked so hard to get here,” Schiller said. “I’m going for fifth, didn’t reach my goal, but I just got to keep working I guess.”

Lehman beat Schiller 6-0, 2-2. Huntley earned at 5-2, 3-1 decision against Schiller.

“I’m right there with those guys, they are just tough,” Schiller said. “They are both really tough dudes, I got to just keep on getting better.”

Schiller will face Cameron Croy of Tennessee for fifth place.

Schiller clinched All-American status for the second time this tournament. Earlier this week, Schiller placed seventh in Greco-Roman at 189 to earn All-American honors.

“It feels better that I’m going for fifth instead of seventh,” Schiller said. “I wrestled tough against two of the nation’s best so it’s a good feeling I guess.”

The Junior freestyle and medal matches are scheduled to run from 9 a.m. until noon today, the final day of the tournament.
